In English language, words can be considered as the smallest elements that have distinctive meanings. Based on their use and functions, words are categorized into several types or parts of speech. In article we will discuss definitions and examples for 8 major parts of speech:
Noun:
A noun is a word that functions as the name of some specific thing or set of things such as living creatures, places, actions, objects, qualities, states of existence or ideas.
Pronoun:
A pronoun is a word that substitutes a noun or a noun phrase.
Verb:
A verb is a word that conveys an action( example: bring, read, walk, run, learn), an occurrence(example: happen, become) or a state of being( example: be, exist, stand).
Adverb:
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective, another adverb, determiner, noun phrase, clause, or sentence. Adverbs typically express manner, place, time, frequency, degree, level of certainty, etc., answering questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?.
Adjective:
An adjective is a describing word, the main syntactic role of which is to qualify a noun or noun phrase, giving more information about the object signified.
Conjunction:
A conjunction is a part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses that are called the conjuncts of the conjoining construction.
Preposition:
Prepositions are words which link nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence.
Prepositions usually describe the position of something, the time when something happens and the way in which something is done, although the prepositions "of," "to," and "for" have some separate functions.
Prepositions can sometimes be used to end sentences. For example, "What did you put that there for?" Example 2: "A pen is a device to write with".

An interjection is a word or expression that occurs as an utterance on its own and expresses a spontaneous feeling or reaction.
